CineConcerts was very fortunate to talk with award-winning British composer Nainita Desai, about her background in mathematics, use of unusual instruments, and her passion for promoting world music through her scores.

Since the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, there have only been seven women nominated in the categories for best musical score. The categories are fluid, sometimes separating out comedies from dramas, and musicals from both. The only women to actually win the award are Marilyn Bergman for Yentl (1983), Rachel Portman for Emma (1996), Anne Dudley for The Full Monty (1997), and now Hildur Guðnadóttir for her work on Joker (2019).

CineConcerts was lucky enough to spend some time with the incredible composing duo, The Newton Brothers (Andy Grush & Taylor Stewart). The Newton Brothers are notable composers, producers, conductors, and multi-instrumentalists best known for their scores in motion pictures such as: Oculus, Gerald’s Game, Ouija: Origin of Evil as well as Netflix’s Extinction and The Haunting of Hill House.
